By Brien M. Have you ever needed to view the contents of a binary file, or modify one to make error messages more informative? Windows comes with a utility called Disk Probe that allows you to easily examine these files. Disk Probe is a combination file editor and disk editor.

As a file editor, Disk Probe lets you make changes to binary files in much the same way you use a text editor to make a change to a text file. By paging through a file, you can find readable text, then use Disk Probe to modify it.

COM this way for personal use only. As a disk editor, Disk Probe lets you manually repair a system’s master boot record MBR after a viral attack. If you aren’t up to the challenge of manually rewriting a master boot record, you can use Disk Probe to back up your existing MBR.

That way, if a virus destroys your MBR, all you have to do is restore your copy and you’re back in business. You can also use Disk Probe to back up and restore your system’s boot sector.

In such a situation, the trick is to remove the hard disk from the malfunctioning system and daisy-chain it to the hard drive in a functional system. You can then use Disk Probe on the functional system and repair the malfunctioning hard drive. If the boot sector or the MBR is the only thing that’s damaged on your hard disk, you’ll probably be able to access your files.

If you saved a copy of your MBR or your boot sector on the hard drive, you should still have access to the copy for use in the repair. Of course, it’s always safer to store your backups on some other medium. Install it and go Disk Probe is part of the Windows Support Tools, and therefore isn’t installed automatically as part of the operating system. When you see the splash screen, select the option to browse the disc’s contents.

EXE program. When Disk Probe initially loads, it’s not set to look at any files or partitions, so you’ll have to tell the program which file, disk, or partition you want to work with. Let’s begin by examining a binary file. Select the Open File command from the File menu. When you choose the file you want to examine, you’ll probably see a message that says the file size isn’t integral to the default sector size. I haven’t encountered any problems by ignoring this message, so go ahead and continue.

When you do, you’ll see the file displayed similarly to the one in the figure below. COM file. In the screenshot, notice at the bottom the indication of drive, sector, and offset. Each file is displayed on a sector-by-sector basis. The blue arrow icons at the top allow you to move through the file’s various sectors. You can move forward or backward by sector or all the way to the end of the file. At this point you’re almost ready to modify the drive’s master boot record or the boot sector, but before you can access a physical or a logical drive, you have to open a handle to the drive a handle is a reservation that allows you to work on the resource in question.

When you select one of these handle commands, you see a dialog box that displays the available drives. Double-click on the drive to select it. If you plan to make changes to the drive, deselect the Read Only check box under the dialog box’s Handle 0 section.

Now, click the Set Active button. Later, when you need to close the handle, come back to this dialog box and click the Close Handle button. Disk Probe displays only a single sector of the physical disk to start with. You have to tell Disk Probe which sectors you want to look at. To do so, select the Read command from the Sectors menu. This will bring up a dialog box that asks you how many sectors you want to read and what sector the reading should start from.

Once you’ve done this, you can use the blue arrows to navigate through the sectors. Another method of navigating sectors is to search for a specific value.

Click on the magnifying glass icon to search for any character or combination of characters. Now that you know how to find a specific item on a hard disk, it’s time to begin the modification.
